From the Basketball Court to the library: Ifose Emile Mbella takes sports to a whole new level

Revered basketballer and one of the country’s finest Ifose Emile Mbella is taking basketball to a whole new level in Cameroon. The soft spoken, calm and humble Mbella who started his career in 1992 at the age of 16 is a pride of his region and indeed the country.

It might not be the favorite sports in the country, but the father of four has played and lived basketball all his live and, accumulating national and international honours as he makes the country proud.

In his book titled “Basic skills in basketball; a practical approach, Coach Mbella as he is fondly called in an exclusive interview with TeboPost, said coaching for him is changing lives.

The 13 chapter book is aimed to serve as a bridge between the theory and the practical in basketball.

In a country like ours (Cameroon) where qualified basketball coaches are almost always absent in the various regions and towns, it is time to bring a write – up to assist build the capacity of those who assist to train our kids.

After a successful career on the Basketball Court, Coach Mbella is taking his knowledge to the library to empower young people and create a sense of purpose on them especially within our local context.

The affilate of the most International Basketball Camp’s, passion for Basketball has taken him through some national and international courses for Basketball. International Trainer Course – ITK, University of Leipzig (2013/2014), International Basketball Coaches Academy, Athletes in Action – AIA – Xenia-Ohio, USA (2014),  International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Programme – ICECP, University of Delaware, USA, Olympic Solidarity and United State Olympic Committee at the USA and Switzerland (2015/2016).

He told me that he has read many books about basketball but is yet to read a book written by a Cameroonian for Cameroonian.

Squeezed on what were his motivations, he says he was motivated to write the book because for him it’s not about putting the ball in the basket but youths needs a particular formation as sportsmen with a unique mindset which is what he is advocating in his book especially as the crisis faces an unprecedented.

He also adds that the book will serves as a guide to teachers of the sports, to better prepare them to train young Cameroonian basketballs and enable the country to be one of the best in the game in the continent.

Talking about the basketball in the country, the Revered basketballer says “we have the best athletes but confused training landscape with outdated knowledge” a daring response to the struggling basketball terrain in the country.

IFOSE Emile MBELLA  is a Senior Youth and Action Counselor (SYAC) from the National Institute of Youths and Sports, NIYS – Yaoundé. He is Vice President i/c Sports and Animation at the Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB). The men’s Head Coach and Senior Youth and Action Counselor (SYAC), Department of Students Affirs University of Buea. President South West Regional League of Basketball (FECABASKET). He is currently a postgraduate student in Educational Psychology, Faculty of Education of the University of Buea.

Coach Mbella is known for his great contributions in the promotion of other sporting disciples apart from Basketball in the South West Region. He also organized the first ever edition of South West basketball camp in 2016
