“Destination Yaoundé” That was the Instagram post shared on Samuel Eto’o Fils’ official account today October 2nd 2018 as the football legend alongside the no-nonsense CAF President Ahmad Ahmad and team jetted into Eto’o and Biya’s Cameroon
The multimillionaire footballer had been solicited by the highest office of the land, to use his massive international connection in the football world and ensure the country’s 2019 AFCON hosting rights remain intact and the ageing striker did not disappoint.
Just few days ago, on the backdrop of multiple outrageous statements by CAF President Ahmad who says the country will not be ready to host the biennial football Jamboree; his organization had said they will not make any decision about the country’s hosting rights till after the October 7th presidential elections.
CAF’s decision was highly praised at home and abroad as many say its executives have maintained the political neutrality of the organization as Presidential campaigns grinds on at home
But the decision by CAF not to announce the fate of Cameroon to host the tournament, punctuated with the fact that North African Nation Algeria had applied just days before to host the events kept many speculating that the country will be stripped of its rights to host what many say is Biya’s pet project for the nation.
Confused, uncertain and nervous, the government once again turn to her most famous and illustrious son, football legend Samuel Eto’o Fils to safe them the shame and embarrassment to lose the hosting rights.
Days later, Ahmad, Eto’o and team were in a private jet to assure Cameroonian authorities that AFCON is theirs to lose, bridging their political neutrality with impunity as the continent watches in shame the taste of Cameroon politics
“I have to thank Samuel Eto’o Fils” Ahmad said “as it is because of him that we are here” the wary looking CAF President continued as he says it now depends on Cameron to say if they are ready because to him, the country will host the events in a stunning and shocking reversal of age old policies
Eto’o Diplomacy at play
Many Cameroonians today October 2nd witness the full display of football diplomacy as once again the country relied on the influence of its illustrious son to survive a potential cardiac arrest
It is not the first time the government is turning to the football super star to help them whenever CAF goes astray.
But the latest outing of the Qatari-based footballer who jetted in Yaoundé with swag and class, quickly declaring his support for the President in the forthcoming Presidential elections has rattled football analysts and questions the apolitical nature of the continents football body.
