Cameroonian celebs hide in shame in the face of Damasus’ unsettling twitter tirades

Published

on

June 17th, 2019. Nigerian celebrity and right advocate Stella Damasus took to her platform of choice, twitter to join her voice among the growing list of celebs and diplomats to call for urgent attention to the Anglophone problem rocking Nigeria’s neighbor “I am not really interested in talking about the soccer match right now. We need to talk about the situation in Cameroon. The country needs help. Have you seen videos of women and babies being killed? I don’t understand how this is okay?”

In a span of 6 hours, the popular award winning actress tweeted 7 times about the Anglophone crisis, calling killings a “genocide” and questions why the conflict is not generating the desired attention

A spasm of social media by her own standard. A….well, you get the idea. It was a lot, sparking social media debate about what really caused the Twitter tirades back in Cameroon

This is not the first time she is adding her voice to issues of continental ramifications or even the world at large.

From Sudan to Mozambique, UK to Cameroon the US-based actress seems obsessed with her desire for a better Africa and rightly so considering her humble upbringing. Her twitter outings have been warmly received by the Anglophone community in Cameroon, a people who feel abandoned by their own Politicians and forgotten by their own celebs that have refused to use their voice to bring change when social responsibility come calling.

Cameroonian celebrities on the large part have betrayed the people, maintaining unforgivable silence in the face of atrocities in their own country. Many have come under the sword for failing to use their influence to speak out and force Yaoundé to find an urgent and lasting solution to a crisis which has killed many. Damasus describe the killings in Anglophone Cameroon as “genocide” and called on anybody who uses social media to add their voices.

But while her hasty conclusion and characterization about the former might be easily forgiven, the killings which are ongoing in the Anglophone regions are alarming and begging for international recognition and intervention. Four months old toddlers have been shot by bullets at close range, patients burnt in hospital live, 70 years old burnt along with entire villages and many more disappeared through kidnappings and killings, it’s a kind of story reminiscent of a horror movie which is playing in Cameroon’s soil and shockingly ignored by mainstream media.

“I wonder why this #Cameroon issue does not have the kind of media coverage that it deserves” Stella weeps as she continues to tweet. Rights groups have held the government culpable for most of the crimes and blame Yaoundé for the worsening crisis.

But government insist they have acted professionally, denies any wrongdoing and puts the blame on the armed civilian fighters whom they say wants to destabilize Cameroon. The results have been no school for about three years, daily fighting in villages and towns in the affected regions and hundreds of thousands displaced in and out of the country with Nigeria thousands of refugees.

By taking fellow celebrities to the task, the Nigerian entertainer has demonstrated the role of celebrity in the face of such brutality, given Cameroonian superstars a textbook example on how to add their voices in the face of adversity Cameroonian celebrities need to wake up and the time is now
